Happy Hour no°228 – 3rd March 2014 Hinamatsuri Day (Girls’ Day Japan)

hina2Today 3rd March is Hinamatsuri Day, or Girls Day (also known as Dolls day) – a traditional celebration held in Japan.
So I thought for Happy Hour I’d play just female artists and tell you what this day is all about…
Platforms are covered with red carpet and used to display a set of ornamental dolls (hina-ningyō) representing the Emperor, Empress, attendants, and musicians in traditional court dress of the Heian period.
Traditionally straw hina dolls set afloat on a boat and sent down a river to the sea, supposedly taking troubles or bad spirits with them.

Music tonight by Japanese singer/actress Umika Kawashima – who celebrates her birthday today…as well as Yumi Matsutoya and Yoko Ono…
Plus tunes by Siousxie and the Banshees, Tori Amos, Cyndi Lauper, Macy Gray and more!
